Minecraft 1.4.2

The latest version of Minecraft came out on the 24th October 2012 and it features new items like flower pots, pumpkin pies and carrots. It also has new mobs like witches and bats. The witches don't do anything (they don't even trade) and they look like normal villagers.
Lots of new foods have been added too, like 3 types of potato included regular, baked and poisonous. Carrots have been added, both regular and golden. Also Pumpkin Pie so there is a less chance of your Minecraft character to go hungry.
In my opinion, this Minecraft update is bigger than the last major update (1.3.1) because it has more noticeable changes which people are more lightly to use.
I like plant pots, basically you can put plants in them and place them around your house. Another pointless feature is mob heads, I suppose you could collect them and use them as decoration in your house however I don't see why you'd want to.
My favourite new feature is Anvil's. You place a tool in the Anvil then you can fix it and restore health on the item. They, however, use lots of iron to build.
The new Beacon is a block that when placed as the final block on top of a pyramid formation made up of diamond, emerald, gold or iron blocks (or any combination of the 4), will emit a beam of light into the sky. It also has weird effects on the player.
In conclusion, this is a good update which adds a lot of exciting items however if Mojang keeps bringing out updates like this every 3 months, Minecraft is soon going to become extremely overcomplicated.

Windows 8 Apps

Windows 8 was launched a few days ago and since then figures have came out and we have learnt that every day another 500 apps are being built and released on the Windows 8 app store. That is amazing!!! One of the new developers is Google and they have already released a search app to compete with Bing. Hopefully in the future we will be seeing more apps from Google like Google Docs, Google Translate, Google+ and more.
Highest rated apps at the moment include Wipikedia, Fliptoast (which combines Twitter and Facebook however Windows 8 has that built in anyway), Freshpaint (for drawing) and Evernote (for sharing notes).

Windows Phone 8 Announced

On Monday the 29th October 2012 at 5PM GMT Microsoft announced Windows Phone 8.

They started off with a short clip about Joe Belfiore who is the manager of Windows Phone. The video showed how he used his Windows Phone and how it balances his work and family life.

He then welcomed everyone and gave a quick introduction. There are 5 main phones running Windows 8 which are going to be coming out soon. There are now over 120,00 apps available for Windows Phone and that is constantly growing.
Windows 8 is becoming more available around the world. They are adding a lot more new languages and making apps more available in certain countries.

Windows Phone is unique because unlike Apple and Android, it has 'live-tiles' based around people instead of a dull icon.

"We are trying to reinvent the smartphone around you!" ~ Joe

They then had another video about who Windows Phone is for, basically everyone. It is a personal operating system and it syncs perfectly with your PC and XBOX.

First demo he did was about 'live-tiles' these are icons on your start page which deliver real time information to you. So your calendar is always up to date and your messages pop up instantly.
Microsoft has now made the lock screen live to. This means that you can have Facebook on your lock screen so your friends profile pictures come up as a collage on your screen. Or you can have live sports scores coming up when your phone is locked.

Microsoft is working with Facebook to produce a new app which will be deeply integrated in the phone. Twitter is also launching a new app which if we're lucky might actually work! (as the current version does not) Despite Zynga's financial troubles recently they are still keen to launch Windows Phone apps, this means Windows Phone users will soon be able to download 'Words with Friends' or 'Draw Something'.
Skype is getting updated to. It is integrated into the phone so this means that even if you're not on the app you can still receive a call instantly if someone wants to talk to you. They have made this cleverly so it doesn't drain your battery running in the background.
New apps coming to Windows Phone 8 which we hadn't even heard rumours about include 'Temple Run', 'Jetpack Joyride' and 'Angry Birds Star Wars'!
'Pandora' is coming to Windows Phone 8 in early 2013 and it will include 1 year of add-free music for no charge whatsoever.

Windows Phone 8's goal is to have 46 out of the top 50 apps from other phones, on Windows Phone.

The new API for developers is released in another Microsoft conference tomorrow.

The next thing he went on to talk about was a new integrated App called 'Data Sense'. It monitors how much of your mobile data you use. You only need to put in how much data you get a month and when your data plan ends. It also helps you find a Wifi network. This app compresses web pages so you don't waste your monthly data surfing the web.

Joe then explained 2 new features one called 'Kids Corner' which creates a separate place on your phone for your children.
To demonstrate how 'Kids Corner' works, Joe got his 3 children out onto stage to play on his phone. He then demonstrated how to set 'Kids Corner' up. Parents can set what apps, music or videos they want their children to be able to access  then when kids get the phone, they can slide right from the normal lock screen and then they are in 'Kids Corner'. If you are not a parent don't worry, this feature can be turned on and off.

They then showed a video starring Jessica Alba and she explained why she uses 'Kids Corner'.
"I don't need to worry about my kids going into my social networks or emailing my partners." ~ Jessica Alba.

The 2nd feature is in the People Hub. You can now have rooms. Rooms are basically groups of people who you can share your location with, message, share notes with or even organise an event with. Even if you don't have a Windows Phone, you can get a more limited version for iPhone however you can still share loads of stuff.

The last thing Joe talked about was how Windows Phone 8 uses Skydrive to sync documents, photos and Music.

Joe then left with a video about how Windows Phone 8 is based around people. Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, then took centre stage and started talking about Windows 8 and how enthusiastic people are being about it. He then gave a summary of Windows 8 and how it is unique from Apple and Android and how it is unique for different users. They are all about personalisation.

Hardware was the next point, he says that Windows Phone has the best hardware available. Nokia, HTC and Samsung have all made phones for Windows Phone 8 and those phones will come out in November.

In conclusion, I would definitely be buying a Windows Phone 8 if I hadn't bought a Windows Phone 7.5 only a few months ago. I was disappointed that there was no mention of Windows Phone 7.8 which is supposed to add some of the Windows Phone 8 features to current Windows Phone 7.5 users.

WP8 Live Wallpaper

With the launch of Windows Phone 8 tomorrow I thought I'd tell you about the last big rumour we expect to be announced. It is live wallpaper and that means that you can set your wallpaper for a football game (for example) and it will update without you having to press anything, you don't even need to unlock your phone.
Alternatively, you could have a news wallpaper which comes up with breaking news stories. The possibilities are endless.

For more information about Windows Phone 8 have a look at some of my previous posts:

Taken 2

If you have seen the first Taken film, well this one is very similar however just as good. In the first taken film an Albanian person was killed by main character, Bryan. In this film, the Albanian person's father comes after Bryan for revenge.
This film is action packed and even if you haven't seen the first film, it is really easy to make sense off as it is a simple, fun and popular action movie.
It is set a few years after the last one so everyone is slightly older. This means that Bryan's daughter Kim is in her late teens so this movie focuses more on her and she taken a big role in finding her parents when they are taken.
In conclusion, I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes to see lots of action, although it has not got the same high budget as the new James Bond movie coming out soon it still has a good plot and is a well made film.

The scary truth of nanotechnology

The idea of cyborgs have been around for decades, now however with the recent advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology we are becoming closer to being half human and half machine. Apparently nanotechnology could be put into the bloodstream and whenever you are ill. It scans what is causing you to be ill and then calls for a cure. This scares me.
Nanotechnology currently is in our smartphones as this is what allows them to be so thin yet do so much so quickly. Nanotechnology is also in tracking devices and other small bits of modern technology.
Nanotechnology is 1 billionth of a metre (that is small).

A good example of something which uses really small technology (maybe even Nanotechnology is the Memoto Lifelogging Camera, you wear this tiny box on the top of your shirt then it takes a photo every 30 seconds and puts them in an app for you to look at. It also takes your GPS location for the photo so you know where the photo was taken. This technology is currently on, it was originally trying to make $50,000 however that sum has been tripled by avid investors.

Nokia Lumia 510 & other Windows Phone rumours

On Tuesday 23rd October 2012 the Nokia Lumia 510 was announced. It runs Windows Phone 7.5 at the moment and it has a 4-inch screen. It has a 5MP camera and all the Nokia Apps however the best thing about it is the price; at only $199 this makes Windows Phone more affordable which will hopefully make it more popular.
Like most Nokia Lumia's it also comes in a variety of colours which is good if you want your phone to be unique and recognisable. The release date has not been confirmed and we are still unsure whether it will run Windows Phone 8 or not.

Rumours of a Microsoft Surface phone have been floating around recently however the evidence behind the rumours is extremely weak so unfortunately the chances of a Surface phone are slim.

There has also been rumours from Evleaks that Huawei might be making a Windows Phone 8. Huawei is a Chinees smartphone company which has recently been accused of breaking consumers privacy in the US. The accusations have now been dropped though.
Anyway their rumoured Windows Phone is called the Ascend W1 and in the picture provided by Evleaks it is in cyan Blue.

Apple iPad Mini, iPad 4, iMac and MacBook's

Only a few hours ago Apple had a special event in California where they announced the iPad Mini and new Macs.

The event started like how all Apple events do, with a speech from Tim Cook (CEO of Apple) about previous Apple product and their success and then some sort of video about it. He talked about the iPhone 5, iOS 6 and the 5th generation iPod Touch.

"All of our iOS devices are powered by iOS 6, our latest version of the world's most advanced mobile operating system." ~ Tim Cook (CEO of Apple)

He says iOS 6 has already got 200 million users and that is only after 1 month. He also says that people send over 28 thousand iMessages every second. There is now 700,000 iOS apps and 35 billion apps have been downloaded!

He then went on to talk about the first app change, it is in iBooks and it allows the user to scroll down, all the way through a book. iBooks now supports Facebook and Twitter integration so you can tweet passages from your book or put them as your status.

The Mac was the next thing Tim talked about. He said the Mac is now #1 notebook and desktop computer in the US. Phil Schiller then took centre stage to talk about the Mac computer.

He then announced a new 13-inch MacBook Pro which is 1/5th thinner than the old model. It is also the lightest MacBook Pro ever and it has a new Retina display with more pixels than a HD TV so everything is even more clearer and crisp to see (almost as good as real life). The sound is almost as good as real life as well as it has 2 stereo speakers. As expected it includes a FaceTime HD camera, dual mics and USB 3.0 ports. Inside it has 8GB of RAM and up to 768GB of storage.
It runs Apple's newest Mac OS which is Mountain Lion which includes iCloud.
As far as pricing goes it is really expensive at a price of $1699 and when you've decided you're bored of it, it is highly recyclable.

Next product brought up is not the rumoured iPad Mini but instead the Mac Mini. It now has USB 3.0 ports and well, basically is just better than the last model. Prices start at $599 and both this and the new MacBooks are available from today.

Last Mac mentioned is the mighty iMac. Phil started by going through the 7 generations of the Mac and how each one has been better than the last. He then showed us the amazing, super thin new Mac. The edge is 5mm thick and it is 80% thinner than the last iMac.
There will be 2 models, a 27-inch and a 21.5-inch, both have a 178 degree viewing angle 75% less reflection than the old model. Amazingly, despite its thinness, you can still have upto 3TB of storage and a Core i5 or Core i7 processor!
Like the old model, they come with a wireless mouse and keyboard and pricing for the 21.5-inch model starts at $1299 and shipping starts in November, for the 27-inch pricing starts at $1799 and shipping starts in December.

Tim Cook then comes back out to talk the iPad. He says that 100 million iPads have been sold and they account for 91% of tablet internet traffic. Tim says that iPads are loved as an educational tool and iBooks textbooks are now available for 80% of the US high school curriculum. So that is why they are bringing out a new iBooks Author to let iBooks publishers include multi-touch widgets, custom fonts (for mathematics equations)  and more.

Tim invites Phil back onto stage and he starts talking about a new quicker 4th generation iPad with an A6X chip. It includes the new lightning connector, better wifi and finally a Lightning to USB and Lightning to an SD card reader. It has the same 10 hour battery life, same price and same colour range. This isn't the iPad mini as it has the same size screen however the next thing announced is.

It can fit in one hand, it is thinner than a pencil and it is 0.68 lbs. It has the same screen resolutions as the iPad 2 yet the screen is 7.9-inches across. All the current iPad apps also work on the iPad Mini. This new iPad Mini has the Apple A5 chip, a FaceTime HD camera, a 5MP iSight camera around back and the Lightning connector. It has the same 10 hour battery life like every other iPad and pricing starts at $329 for the 16GB version.
Since it is technically an iPad you can purchase smaller iPad accessories like the smart cover.
The 4th Generation iPad and the iPad Mini both come out on the 2nd of November 2012.

Tim Cook retakes the stage and talks about everything Apple has done this year.

"We hope you love these products as much as we love creating them." ~ Tim Cook (CEO of Apple)

Microsoft Apps in Apps

One of the main features that Microsoft is highlighting in Office 2013 is apps that you can embed into your word, excel, outlook or powerpoint document. This sounds like a great idea for Powerpoint so you can integrate Bing Maps, it's also a plus for Word so you are able to look information up without leaving the app however I don't see the positives for any other program in Office 2013, no doubt there will be some though.

I don't get what apps you will get in Outlook, if you want to research something it is really easy to just 'Bing it' on Windows 8 and if you want to embed a link to maps you may as well just copy and paste the url. If the person you are sending the email to doesn't have Outlook 2013 you are pretty much stuffed if you start using fancy apps to send them simple stuff.

I also think, that this could be something great if enough people used Office 2013 and if you want to make a clean looking business presentation then the apps will come in really handy. Even for some of the out of the ordinary stuff like embedding a live Olympics medal table or an American Election tracker. There is an app for that.

War on the Surface!

It's official, the Microsoft Surface is going to be huge competition for Apple's iPad and iMac. Without the touch or type keyboard and running Windows 8 RT, the new Microsoft Surface will cost £399; an iPad matching, Mac beating price.

That is the basic version, if you want Windows 8 Pro it comes with a stylus and the tablet itself is slightly thicker. That price hasn't been announced yet.
The stylus isn't a normal stylus though because the Surface's screen is made for both touch and stylus and it can tell which one is which. This means you can write with your stylus and even if the side of your palm is leaning on the screen it won't affect what you are doing with the stylus.

The outer shell of all the versions of the Surface are made from a strong titanium. To prove the strength, an employee at Microsoft even strapped some wheels to the bottom and used it as a skateboard. They also did the standard drop test, which it passed.

At the moment Microsoft is taking a leaf out of Apple's book for connectors, instead of having loads of ports on the side of the Surface for different things such as VGA, HD connector and extra power supply they have one port that works for all. You just need to buy the right adapter cable. At the moment all the adaptors are around £30, so I'd say that pretty reasonably.

If you want to buy one of the uniquely thin touch keyboard that will set you back £99 however for that you get to pick from one of the 5 colours. It is really light and 3.25mm thick. It also comes with all the Windows 8 keys like the home button, options and settings.

If you don't like the sound of not being able to push down on keys you can get the slightly more expensive type cover. This has exactly the same features apart from the keys are physical.

For a full list of Microsoft's Hardware, which is compatible with Surface, look here: Windows 8 Hardware

Mad Marketing
Rumours say that Microsoft has spent $1 billion on advertising for Windows 8 and so far they've released a few adverts. Some really weird like the one for Surface (below) and more normal adverts showing off some of the amazing Windows 8 features.

New Chromebook

Although I don't really see a market for Chromebooks, this new Chromebook might just make a market for itself.

The market I see the Chromebook making is for middle class families who want something that parents can use for word processing and the kids can use for playing games. The new Chromebook fits this market brilliantly and at an exceptionally good price.

The new Chromebook is made by Samsung and it coming out in the next month for a price of £229 in the UK.

Although at that price it looks like an amazing deal you only get 100GB of Google Drive storage for 2 years, then you need to start paying. Also, I'd be cautious about saving important documents on there because I still don't trust the cloud 100%. Remember, you can't have Microsoft Office because it doesn't have a disk drive and you can only get apps from the Chrome-store.

In conclusion, Chromebooks will continue to be made for a weak market however they will never compete with Apple Macs and Windows PC's.

F1 2013 Drivers

Lewis Hamilton, 27, is moving to Mercedes next F1 season
A few weeks ago we found out that Michael Schumacher is retiring again and that Lewis Hamilton would be moving McLaren to take his place.
This is a ballsy move from Hamilton as Mercedes is an average team at the moment and nowhere near winning the F1 championship. Despite this, Hamilton says that he could stay at McLaren and keep winning odd races however what he really wants is a challenge and that is what Mercedes will give him. He will be partners with Nico Rosberg who has been in Formula 1 for some years now however has failed to win the World Championship.
Sergio Perez who has now spent 2 years in Formula 1 will be taking Hamiltons place at McLaren with Jenson Button as his partner. Perez is a good driver however doesn't have many race wins under his belt as he is not currently with a strong team.
Although there was rumours of Webber leaving Redbull it looks like both him and his team mate, Sebastian Vettel, will be staying in the strong team. So far in the 2012 season, Sebastian Vettel has been the only driver to win 2 races back-to-back.
The Ferrari team is also lightly to say the same with Alonso and Massa however it is anticipated that Felipe Massa's future will be announced later this week.
Lotus and Toro Rosso are also lightly to stick with their current drivers.
Bruno Senna who currently races for Williams is lightly to move to HRT with a faster new driver, Bottas, taking his place. Senna will be teammates with De La Rosa who will be the oldest driver racing next year (for HRT).
Force India is lightly to keep Scottish driver Paul Di Resta however the 2nd driver has not been confirmed yet as it could be anyone. Rumours suggest it might be Sutil or Alguersuari.
Marussia is staying with Timo Glock however he is joined by a new English driver called Chilton. Charles Pic who raced for Marussia this year is rumoured to be going to Caterham joining Heikki Kovalainen (although it is unknown if Kovalainen is actually staying there).

Apple has the winning formula

With Windows 8 being released at the end of this month and Apple's latest Mac operating system that came out in June being popular, I'm questioning how good Windows 8 is going to be.
Above is a chart which shows operating systems over different platforms. You can see that Apple's iOS is for phones and tablets however Microsoft's Windows 8 is for Tablets and computers. At the moment what Apple is doing is working (and that is why they are leading tech company) so I think it is too late for Windows 8. Maybe if they launched it 2 years ago it may have have had a chance, but unfortunately they didn't.

Stand up to Cancer

'Stand up to Cancer' is a charity which raises money to find a cure to Cancer. They believe that a cure is almost in our grasp and the only thing that they need to find it is funding. It is a popular charity in America apparently raising 80-millions dollars.
So during October they are putting a show on Channel 4 which I assume will be like Comic Relief and Children in Need where they will show a number of videos trying to raise as much money as possible. They also want to raise awareness about cancers.
Celebrities such as Keith Lemmon, Alan Carr, Gordon Ramsey, David Hasselhoff and loads more are helping out on the evening of Friday 19th October 2012 at 7:30PM, so make sure you tune in.

New Nano

The old iPod Nano was amazing. It was a perfect square with curved corners and you could get awesome cases for it to make it look like a watch. With the new iPod Nano, consumers were hoping for something like the Pebble watch (so it notifies you when you had a new message or email on your phone via bluetooth.)
Unfortunately the New iPad Nano is less Nano and more like a squished iPod Touch as it is now a rectangle with a 2.5-inch screen. It also has it's own new operating system which Apple is calling the 'iPod Nano OS' which includes a lot of circles.
Music lovers were also hoping that you would be able to stream music to your iPod Nano instead of having to plug it into your PC or Mac everytime you want a new track. We might need to wait another year for this.
Despite this, unfortunately it is still the best thing on the market to listen music through. Companies like Sony produce good MP3 players however none are to the high quality of the iPod Nano.

New Tweetdeck

The new Tweetdeck came out recently and if you didn't already know, Tweetdeck is an app which combines Twitter and Facebook in multiple columns. It is made by Twitter and recently it was made a lot more user friendly.
It now gives you the option to change from the dark, gloomy interface to a lighter version which is more spread out. It also gives you the option to change the font to be bigger or smaller and change the width of the columns however that is about it.
It is worth doing the update however don't expect too much.
Unfortunately, if you have the Google Chrome web app you might need to uninstall and then re-install Tweetdeck (like what I needed to do because I couldn't see and easier way).

Apple confident about iPad Mini

Although Apples Kindle Fire has not came to the UK yet, it has been a massive success in the rest of the world. It has a 7-inch screen and therefore costs slightly less than the average tablet.
Rumours that Apple was going to make a 7-inch iPad have been spreading recently and it looks like they will be announcing it later this month. Sources say that it will cost between £249 and £299 in the UK.
The biggest thing that hit the news about the 'iPad Mini' lately was a massive production order that Apple sent to China. Apple apparently ordered 10 million iPad Mini's to be made! This is an understandable thing to do as they ran out of iPhone 5's pretty quickly last month. Unfortunately production might be delayed a little as earlier this week some of the Apple manufacturing factories went on strike complaining about 'terrible' working conditions.

All for one

As brands and shops become ever so competitive you may not have realised that slowly some shops and brands are going bust and having to shut down. This happened to Woolworths and has more recently happened to JJB (it almost happened to Game to).
Earlier this month Google took over Microsoft as the 2nd richest tech company which means that slowly Microsoft is becoming less popular. With Windows 8 not looking that promising, Microsoft is relying on Windows Phone 8 which is luckily looking amazing however they can't put all of their eggs into that basket.

I think that in the future there will be one shop for everything. For example  you want a computer - you go to Apple, you want a phone - you go to HTC, you want a new tracksuit - go to Sports Direct, you want a birthday card - you go to WHSmith and the list will continue until slowly the margin between small and large businesses will be huge. There won't even be a place for medium businesses as the rich companies will have just bought them.

Saturday, 6 October 2012

A few years ago t-mobile and Orange merged together in England which meant that both companies customers could use the other companies signal. They kept as 2 separate companies until now. They are now called EE and are going to be the first 4G wireless network in England. It is getting launched at the end of October and the 4G network will be completely up and running by Spring next year.
It is about time that 4G came to the England, as some countries around the world have had LTE (4G) for almost 6 years now!
EE has announced that the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy SIII, HTC One XL and Huawei Ascend P1 LTE will be compatible with their new service and so will the 2 new Nokia Lumia Windows 8 Phones when they are released next month.
When it is first released it will only be available in cities however they say by the end of 2014 they will be covering 98% of England's population.
Vodafone and O2 have been made to wait a bit longer before they are allowed to launch their 4G network (don't know why though).

Windows 8 Software

Today Microsoft announced what apps would be built into Windows 8. As expected, mail, people and photos are inbuilt however surprisingly, lots of Bing apps are built in as well such as Bing Maps, Bing News and lots more Bing information apps. Skydrive, Calender, Music and Video are also included.

Firefox has also announced it's Windows 8 app this week. The desktop browser company has launched the app so it it ready for the launch of Windows 8 on the 26th of October.
I must admit that I've never actually used Firefox however this app looks like it has some quite good features.
Unfortunately though, it looks like every other app on the Windows 8 marketplace. At least with the iPad every app looked and worked completely different.

Click here for more about Bing apps.

Windows 8 Hardware

With the launch of Windows 8 coming extremely soon Microsoft has made a whole lot of weird new hardware that supports Windows 8.
A wavy keyboard and a tiny wedge mouse are in this new range, a standard microsoft mouse and what looks like a multi-touch mouse are also included.
The multi-touch mouse is built for the Windows 8 gestures (like the Apple one).
All the prices have been announced and they look to be more on the expensive side however that is understandable since earlier this month Microsoft dropped to the 3rd richest tech company getting taken over by Google. The touch mouse is $79.95 and it should sell well as long as Windows 8 is a success.

Minecraft Vs Microsoft

Although the Windows 8 Start screen looks quite cool with the live tiles and the apps built by Microsoft and Bing are awesome, what about games developers?
Like with Windows Phone, I can imagine that x-box is built into Windows 8 and that is all well and good however what about games which you download like Minecraft?
Mincecraft is the 1st person game where you dig and place blocks to build whatever you like fighting monsters whilst you do so. It is one of the best PC games off all time and it was made even more popular earlier this year when it came out on x-box 360. It works better with a keyboard and mouse as that is how you control your character so I can see it being quite awkward to play with a trackpad and a small keyboard dock. That is why earler this week, when Microsoft e-mailed the creator of Minecraft, Markus "Notch" Persson, he replied telling them to "stop trying to ruin the PC as an open platform". He even went so far to say that "I'd rather have minecraft not run on win 8 at all than to play along. Maybe we can convince a few people not to switch to win 8 that way,"

It was discovered recently that because of the way apps are written for Windows 8, Android apps are compatible with all the Windows 8 devices so developers don't need to make a seperate Android and Windows 8 app. (This is good news for Microsoft)
